“Very.” Jake continues to kiss around my face and neck, until soon it leads to other delicious things. After making love, we fall asleep in each other’s arms, happy and content.

  Epilogue

  Six months later

“Okay, Becky, I’m out. I’m meeting you know who for lunch.” I give her a wink.

“Yup, have fun.” She drawls out the last word. Becky has become painfully aware of Jake and my lunches. She walked in on us one time. It was embarrassing for everyone, so we stopped doing it at my office. I didn’t want to make Becky feel uncomfortable at work either. To her credit, she thought it was hilarious. She kept teasing me about disinfecting the furniture.

My work is booming. It’s been amazing. I was featured in a local magazine as one of the top up and coming designers in the area. Jake was so proud of me. He had it framed and hung in my office for me. Becky has been a blessing. She’s organized my calendar and updated my software. I’m on the cutting edge of everything. Who knew she was so tech savvy? I’ve also given her some of my clients and her designs have been gorgeous. We’re really making a go of this.

It seems we were wrong about Trent Calloway. He actually was in Brownwood laying low with his mother. Jerry Smite received thirty years for aggravated assault, breaking and entering, auto theft, and attempted rape. I didn’t attend the court hearing. I’ve seen enough of that man to last me a lifetime. Jake followed the case closely. There was a lot of damning evidence and with his history of assault, it was an open-and-shut case. It’s a relief that horrible man is in jail and won’t be able to hurt anyone else.

Lee, Hunter, and the baby are doing well. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another announcement soon of another member to the family. She’s turned into a real country girl. They have chickens now on the farm and she even picks fresh eggs in the morning.

Maggie is dating a guy she refuses to acknowledge, but Lee and I are getting to the bottom of it. It’s payback time. She’s had a rough time of it lately and needed all the support she can get. I’m glad she might have a man in her corner. Lee and I just might have to pop in to that salon of hers and surprise her one day. Or maybe I should hang out in the parking lot and catch her in the act. I giggle to myself.

After a short walk, I’m outside Jake’s office. He’s waiting out front for me. He looks so handsome with his blue suit. This man still gives me butterflies. I’ve become a bit of a sap since being with Jake. I’m okay with that. Jake has changed me for the better. I’m able to appreciate the little things. I was in such a terrible relationship before, that I cherish the amazing one I have now. I can’t imagine being with anyone else.

“Hey, baby.” My cheeks still warm when he calls me baby. I give him my lips. Jake holds my head delicately between his hands. I love when he’s soft with me. I love when he’s rough too. It’s never dull with Jake. We’ve spoken about sharing an office space together, but that was quickly dismissed since there would be more desks available to us. We would never get any work done.

“Hi, handsome. I missed you.” I kiss him quickly on the lips.

“Mmm, I love it when you miss me. You always show me how much later.”

I straighten his tie and shake my head at him.

“Not now, tiger. We have a lunch date, to eat.”

His eyebrows go up and down. He’s a pervert. I love it.

“Food, baby.” I pout. I must be really in love with this man to turn down oral. I do have an agenda though. We have reservations at the Italian restaurant where we had our first date.

“Fine.” That makes him a bit grumpy. He loves his afternoon delight. I’ll make it up to him soon. We walk the four blocks to Little Italy. I’ve been planning this for a while now. I’m nervous and not sure how Jake’s going to respond. We arrive to the quaint eatery and are seated quickly. Hopefully, Jake doesn’t notice my restlessness.

This whole scene reminds me of that first date when he was asking about my employer and if I liked my boss. It seems like ages ago. Not only do I have a new business, I have a new home and a wonderful man in my life. My life has done a compete one-eighty. I’m happy, steady, and committed. I look across the table at the man who has upended my life in the most beautiful way. I can’t even wait for the breadsticks to get this off my chest.

  “So . . .” I stall out.

  “So . . .” Jake grins.

I lean over the table to reach for his kiss. He doesn’t hesitate, he never does. After I get my kiss I’m able to continue with what I need to say.

“I wanted to come here today to let you know how much you mean to me.”

Jake looks intently at me and I proceed.

“I love you more with each passing day and I can’t imagine us not being together. I want to show you how much I trust you and so I would like to know, if you’d marry me?” I move around the table right next to him to hold his hand. Jake seems utterly shocked. In fact, his mouth is wide open. I push his chin up and he closes it.

“Wow, I can’t believe you would ask. I didn’t take you for that kind of girl. You’ve always seemed to like when a man takes over.” He smiles at me.

That’s not a yes. I’m squirming in my seat. I wait for his answer.

“That’s why a month ago, I got you this.” Jake pushes across a black velvet box that every girl can recognize. I gasp.

“Jake!” My hands come to my face. I can’t believe what’s happening. Jake moves down from his seat and kneels next to me.

He whispers, “I wanted to propose to you on my knees with my lips on your pussy, but this’ll work too. You beat me to it, sugar. Will you marry me?”

Tears of joy spill over my cheeks. He opens the box and there set in velvet is the most gorgeous ring I’ve ever seen. It’s a stunner. An oval cut diamond encased in gold. I grab and kiss Jake, not able to wait another minute to be wrapped around this man.

“Of course, I’ll marry you,” I whisper in his ear. I pull away and he slips on the sparkling ring. It’s a perfect fit. “I can’t believe you proposed.” I wipe at my eyes. He gets up and slides in right next to me, placing his arm around my shoulders. I can’t stop looking at my new engagement ring.

“I can’t believe you did.” Jake looks at me bemused.

“I wanted to take the risk and show you how much you mean to me. I wanted to take this next step with you.”

  He nuzzles into my neck.

“I want to take every step with you.”

I melt at his words. I knew this was a big step for us. I also knew it was the right one. If we’re in love, committed, trusting, and living together, what was to stop us from taking that next step? I didn’t want it to be our past. I know I want to spend the rest of my life with this man. So, I took the big leap for both of us. I just didn’t think he’d be ready to ask me in return.

That’s how perfect we are for each other. When we’re both set in our ways, we changed for each other. We overcame our pasts, with trust and love. All the rules were broken. We took the leap together. I kiss him passionately with all the love I have for him.

“Did you get me a ring?” he mumbles against my lips.

I look up like I’m thinking of something. “Well, I did get you a sort of ring.”

He leans back awaiting my answer.

“When I went to the doctor last week, I changed my birth control to a vaginal ring.” I giggle.

  Jake’s eyebrows shoot up.

“Can I try out my ring?”

  I nod my head, blushing.

He looks around the restaurant. “Check, please!”
